Hoops for the Cure and Valentines Day!
Need a fun way to celebrate
Valentine’s Day? Join us for Hoops for the Cure Saturday, February 14, 2015 at
2 pm. Prior to tipoff, survivors are invited to a special pre-game reception and
survivor parade beginning at 1pm. Survivors are also welcome to stop by the
Komen Tidewater office to claim their free ticket to an event that holds a
special spot in the Old Dominion Lady Monarch's Basketball team’s heart.
As many of us know, Coach Barefoot
has seen her fair share of those affected by Breast Cancer and that each year,
this particular game means more than most. This year proves to be no different.
Annette Chester, Barefoot’s Administrative Specialist, shares the survival
story of her sister-in-law.
New England
native, Rhonda Dettmer is the embodiment of why yearly mammograms prove to be
so vitally important. At 40 years old, Rhonda received her first screening
after seeing an advertisement for “free mammograms for your 40th
birthday”. Because she was uninsured and no one in her family had ever been
diagnosed, she had put the screening on the backburner. Now she knew that there
was no excuse.
After
her exam, she was sure that something seemed off—just not right. Within a few
hours, she received a call from her doctor explaining that they had found a
lump in her breast. Although she remained positive, relying on her faith, she
was told that she had cancer. The cancer was so close to her chest wall, it was
not easily detectable and may have been missed if she had limited her screening
to just a clinical breast exam.
Because of the early detection, she
was given the option of a lumpectomy with radiation and other treatments or a
mastectomy of her right breast. Rhonda opted for the mastectomy.
Rhonda has now been cancer-free for
nearly 20 years and is a mother of two children. She admits that although it
was scary to hear that she was fighting breast cancer, she is beyond relieved
that early detection saved her life. For anyone who will face treatment decisions,
Rhonda offers this advice: “Once you have decided, don’t second guess yourself.
The healing process is better when you are comfortable with what you’re doing.”
See you at Hoops for the Cure on Saturday,
February 14th. Free survivor
tickets are at the Komen Tidewater office, additional tickets can be purchased
for $10 each. The first 1000 people will
receive a commemorative t-shirt and pom-pom.

New Breast Exam Nearly Quadruples Detection of Invasive Breast Cancers
in Women with Dense Breast Tissue
Newswise - Rochester, Minn. - A new breast imaging
technique pioneered at the Mayo Clinic and financially supported by Susan. G
Komen grant programs, nearly quadruples detection rates of invasive breast
cancers in women with dense breast tissue, according to the results of a major
study published this week in the American Journal of Roentgenology.
Molecular Breast Imaging (MBI) is a supplemental imaging
technology designed to find tumors that would otherwise be obscured by
surrounding dense breast tissue on a mammogram. Tumors and dense breast tissue
can both appear white on a mammogram, making tumors indistinguishable from
background tissue in women with dense breasts. About half of all screening-aged
women have dense breast tissue, according to Deborah Rhodes, M.D., a Mayo
Clinic Breast Clinic physician and the senior author of this study.
MBI increased the detection rate of invasive breast
cancers by more than 360 percent when used in addition to regular screening
mammography, according to the study. MBI uses small, semiconductor-based gamma
cameras to image the breast following injection of a radiotracer that tumors
absorb avidly. MBI exploits the different behavior of tumors relative to
background tissue, producing a functional image of the breast that can detect tumors
not seen on mammography.
Michael O’Connor, Ph.D., a Mayo Clinic scientist and
inventor of the MBI technology, calls this latest study a major milestone for
both safety and efficacy of the imaging device, largely because of the high
detection rates achieved through low radiation exposure.
“We are very
excited about what MBI can offer women with dense breasts,” says Amy Conners,
M.D., chair of Mayo Clinic’s Breast Imaging Division and a co-author of this
study. “While we endorse annual mammography for all women age 40 and over, and
the addition of annual MRI for women at high risk, MBI fills an important gap
for supplemental screening in women with dense breasts who are not otherwise at
high risk.”
The study was made possible by a grant from the Susan G. Komen
Foundation and a Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) grant from
the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), a component
of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). To read the whole article, visit: http://www.newswise.com/articles/new-breast-exam-nearly-quadruples-detection-of-invasive-breast-cancers-in-women-with-dense-breast-tissue#.VMufEzLSFds.email

Pink in the Rink
This year marked the 8th Annual Pink in the Rink
Fundraiser with our Norfolk Admirals. With each row of seats lined with abundant
Komen pink, it was a sight to see—especially while reflecting off of the once a
year pink ice!
Not only did the game raise
awareness and bring the men and women battling breast cancer together, but it
also featured a silent action. The silent auction garnered a lot of attention due
primarily and one of a kind Admiral gear, donated by the team and management,
along with some Komen accessories and handmade awareness blankets. The auction
raised over $2,500; 75% of which will stay local with the remaining 25% going
to National research grant programs.
The success of Pink in the Rink cannot
have happened without the help of our wonderful volunteers and sponsors. A
special thank you goes out to Christina Moore of Klar Voorhees Orthodontics,
Macy Causey of Causey Racing and Michelle Beech.
Christina Moore was our puck
dropper for the event. Moore was with breast cancer diagnosed in August of 2014
and a month later underwent a double mastectomy. In December, Klar Voorhees donated
$1000 to Susan G. Komen in honor of her fight. WE are lucky to have their support.
Macy Causey, a 14 year old racecar
driver, came out to support the cause along with her pinked out racecar. She
even signed autographs for her many fans in attendance. Make sure to look out
for Macy during this upcoming race season!
Michelle Beech celebrated her birthday
at Pink in the Rink for the 7th year in a row. To make her day really special the Admirals
invited her to ride the pregame Zamboni! Michelle was our top ticket seller,
selling nearly 100 tickets to the event!
Thank you to the Norfolk Admirals
and their staff for another wonderful year. We are already looking forward to
next year.

2015 YSC (Young Survivor Coalition) Summit Conference and Regional Symposium
Are you a young survivor or co-survivor? Do you wish that
there were other young women who understood your battle? Since Susan G. Komen
knows that there are many young women affected by the disease, we are a proud
sponsor of the Young Survivor Coalition (YSC) and are fully committed to young survivors, and helping them with the varied
challenges they face.
The YSC national
conference features up-to-date information about the unique needs of young
women with breast cancer including:
- An array of inspirational speakers
- Fun and empowering events
- Educational workshops
- Wellness activities
- Discussion groups
The conference connects over 600
young survivors while also providing information on their learning track
tailored to the newly diagnosed, post treatment, long-term survivorship
or
those living with metastatic disease. Co-survivors and guests are also
connected and can learn ways to support their partner, while also being
reminded of the importance of taking care of themselves. Healthcare
providers
are invited to learn more about the needs of this particular population,
along with discovering the resources to share with their patients.
This year’s conference will be held from March 6th-8th
in Houston, Texas at the Hilton Americas.
There will be a one day regional symposium a bit closer to
home, on June 6th in Washington, D.C. This one-day symposium focuses
on the individual pursuit of resilience and survivorship for the young women
affected by and diagnosed with breast cancer.
To learn more about YSC events, visit their website.
