YOU Could Win a Diamond!
Please Join Us for the 3rd Annual Pink-o de Mayo Fundraising Gala!
|
Pink-o de Mayo is a night of merriment and music, cocktails and canapés, fun and philanthropy. All proceeds from this fabulous evening will benefit Komen Tidewater as we work to enable women in our service area to detect and survive breast cancer.
Throughout the evening guests will enjoy drinks, hors d’oeuvres, a chance to win a diamond at the Sip, Sparkle and Shine Bar–where each glass purchased gives you the chance to win a diamond or other gemstones as well as a silent auction, filled with wonderful, enticing items that will open up hearts and wallets making this evening a night of memories.
Dance to Latin rhythms, and enjoy the performance of Melinda and Scott Mielock from Just Dance On studios. If you are unsure of the steps or have never tried the Salsa they will help you learn the basics.
The music will be provided by Mangu Power’s from Selecta AM 1050 WVXX.

Volunteer Spotlight, Sheryl Sugg
Sheryl has been a volunteer with the Susan G. Komen Tidewater Affiliate for over 6 years! She lost her mother to breast cancer in 1995, so the subject is near and dear to her heart. Sheryl is a steady volunteer who works in the office every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. We depend on Sheryl’s dedication and participation with the daily operations, and we also value Sheryl’s opinions on many topics concerning the affiliate and her beloved University of Florida Gators! She is a trusting and patient listener and is devoted Komen mission to end breast cancer forever.
Did you know? Sheryl is a very talented quilter, and she is always amazing us with her new projects! She made the quilt to the left for Pink-o de Mayo 2015! You can meet her at Pink-o de Mayo 2016!
Thank you, Sheryl!

Spotlight on Science: Genetics and Side Effects-- Dr. Bryan Schneider
One of the most promising new trends in cancer science is the search for personalized medicines – finding treatments that are right for individual patients and identifying those that might not work based on a patient’s genetic makeup and medical history. In 2009, Komen provided $6 million in research funding to an Indiana University team looking for genetic markers that could predict which patients would respond to a new experimental drug. Soon, the research from this Komen Promise Grant opened promising new doors about genetics and treatment side effects.
The team was led by Indiana University’s Bryan Schneider, M.D. (one of our Komen Scholars) and David Flockhart, M.D., Ph.D., along with patient advocate Mary Lou Smith, Esq., co-founder of Research Advocacy Network. We spoke to Dr. Schneider about this grant to learn more. Click here for more information.
