Our Story

Misty's Story....................

This year, I decided to register for the "Komen Race for the Cure".  I have walked in other "Awareness" walks in the past,  but never the "Race for the Cure".  This year will be different.  I want to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.  This year I will walk. This year I am a "Survivor".....

A "Survivor" is not the title I ever wanted, but am thankful I am still here to fight the fight and spread the word about Breast Cancer and early detection.  We have all heard throughout our lives to do regular breast exams and be aware of our bodies.  Well, I never felt a lump, neither did my doctor. I was having pain in my left breast, but only when I pushed on a certain area.   I googled "breast pain" and read that it wasn't a symptom of Cancer, so didn't think much about it, until it didn't go away.  In Nov. 2014, I had had a 2D Mammogram and the results came back normal.  But, it did show that I had dense breasts .  They had recommended I get a 3D Mammogram, but I took that as next time I get one, I would make sure it was 3D.

On Jan. 6, 2017, I went for a 3D Mammogram and Ultrasound.   I will never forget the look on the radiologists face.  (She would not make a good poker player).   She asked me several questions and then shared her concerns.  There were 3 areas in my left breast and 1 in my right.  Biopsies were scheduled and so this Journey began.

In March, I had surgery and had both breasts removed.  They also discovered it had spread to 8 of the 12 lymph nodes they tested. So, chemo was a must, as well as radiation.  And, let's not forget the hormone pill that I will have to take the rest of my life.  It is apparently supposed to make me really moody!!  I am apologizing in advance!

Chemo treatments started in April and on August 10th I completed my last one and was able to ring the bell.    The "Ringing of the Bell" signifies you have completed your chemo and have survived one of the most difficult parts of the Journey.  It was a very emotional day for me, but also very eye opening.  There were three of us that day that rang the bell and I was the oldest at 44.  Let that sink in a bit........  My fellow "Chemo Buddies" were 22 and 27.

I am now happy to say, I have completed the first 2 weeks of radiation treatment, only 4 more weeks to go!  Then this "Deconstruction Phase" of this Journey will be complete.  2018 will be the "Reconstruction Phase" and I am sooooo looking forward to a new year!!!  I have truly been blessed through this Journey with so much support and love from my family and friends.  I am forever grateful and humbled.

2017 has been one heck of a year and because I want to give back, I'm walking on Oct. 14th.  Please consider making a tax-deductible donation today in support of my fundraising efforts.  Or, lace up your shoes and walk with me.

Your support helps get one step closer to a world without breast cancer. 75 percent of the money raised through the Race stays in the community to fund local breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs. The remaining 25 percent supports groundbreaking breast cancer research.

We cannot stop until this disease is gone forever................... Don't Stop Believing.

And get a 3D Mammogram...........it could save your life.........

Thankful, Grateful, and Blessed,

Misty
